The Out-Laws: Breaking Free from Stereotypes
Have you ever seen a movie where four sisters take justice into their own hands to save their brother? Well, Dutch-Belgian television series The Out-Laws, known as Clan in Belgium, does just that.
The Out-Laws is an incredible dark comedy that follows this family’s journey into saving their brother Goedele. The plot might seem familiar; however, the writers take the audience on a wild and unexpected rollercoaster ride through this Belgian family’s lives.
The show premiered in Belgium in 2012 and spread internationally due to its success. The Out-Laws received positive critical acclaim for its perfect blend of humor, suspense, and drama. It is the perfect combination to keep you on your toes, though you never know what will happen next.
The storyline revolves around the Goethals family’s lives where they are seemingly living average lives until one of them suddenly dies by apparent suicide. The peculiar thing is that not long after the eldest sister Beatrice (Kristine Van Pellicom) keeps finding evidence that leads her to believe foul play was involved in their sister’s death.
As she starts digging deeper and deeper into her sister’s death, she doesn’t know who she can trust anymore. She needs to find solid proof before it’s too late; however, Beatrice soon realizes that every one of her sisters has been keeping secrets from each other.
Each sister has a unique personality trait that makes them stand out from each other. Eldest Beatrice is an obsessive-compulsive personality with everything organized down to the most minor detail. Second sister Trudy (Ruth Beeckmans) is hilarious but incredibly anxious at times.
Third-born Goedele (Maaike Neuville), who has been accused of killing her husband by suicide himself now finds herself framed for killing someone else. Fourth-born Eva (Barbara Sarafian) is a successful businesswoman but has a secret from her sisters that could destroy their lives. All of these intricate personalities create an exciting and complex dynamic amongst the family.
One of the most interesting aspects of this show is that it portrays women in roles that are typically male-dominated. They are strong, capable, and independent women who find themselves not needing men to fix their problems for them. It’s empowering to see them taking justice into their own hands, breaking free from societal stereotypes.
The Out-Laws is an excellent example of how society’s expectations for women can be subverted while also telling an entertaining and thrilling story. The show has incredible performances by its cast members, who bring their characters to life by keeping the audience engaged till the end of each episode.
The showrunners have done an outstanding job with this series. Each episode leaves you craving more and more as you become addicted to the plot-line’s ongoing twists and turns.
The cinematography on The Out-Laws is stunning, capturing every moment beautifully without taking away from its overall darkness. The production design is top-notch: the house used in the series seems to have a life of its own as its eerie atmosphere enhances the show’s overall sense of foreboding.

One particular scene involves one sister sitting alone in a car while listening to Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy The Silence,” which highlights how music can elevate some moments in visual storytelling.
