Review

Everyone wants to be a part of the cool kids’ club. And Richard Linklater’s “Everybody Wants Some!!” is all about that. This 2016 comedy film is set in the early 1980s where a group of college baseball players tries to navigate their way through their last weekend before classes start. But this movie is more than just about partying and hooking up with girls; it’s also a coming-of-age story that explores identity, masculinity, and the pressure to fit in.

The movie stars Blake Jenner as Jake, a freshman pitcher who moves into an off-campus house with his teammates. There’s Finnegan (Glen Powell), the charming ladies’ man who always seems to know what to say; McReynolds (Tyler Hoechlin), the hot-headed team captain who takes himself too seriously; Willoughby (Wyatt Russell), the stoner philosopher who drops deep thoughts when he’s not high, and many more.

The ensemble cast is one of the strongest points of this movie. Each character has their own distinct personality and quirks that make them memorable. They may seem like stereotypical jocks at first glance, but as the movie goes on, you get to see their vulnerabilities and insecurities.

One standout scene involves a conversation between Jake and a theater student named Beverly (Zoey Deutch) whom he meets at a party. They discuss their favorite books and movies, and Beverly challenges Jake’s perception of masculinity. It’s a refreshing moment that shows how far we’ve come since then in terms of gender roles.

Another thing that makes “Everybody Wants Some!!” so enjoyable to watch is its killer soundtrack. The movie features songs from Van Halen, Blondie, The Cars, and many other iconic bands from that era. The music adds to the overall vibe of nostalgia that permeates throughout the film.

Speaking of nostalgia, Linklater did an excellent job of capturing the look and feel of the early ’80s. The clothing, hairstyles, and props all transport you back in time. It’s evident that a lot of care and attention to detail went into making this movie.

“Everybody Wants Some!!” wasn’t a box office hit when it came out, but it has since garnered a cult following. It’s not hard to see why; the movie has a charm and humor that is infectious. It’s the type of movie that you can watch over and over again without getting tired of it.

One criticism of the movie is that it doesn’t have much of a plot. It’s more like a series of vignettes that follow the characters as they engage in various activities over the course of one weekend. But I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes, movies can get bogged down by convoluted storylines and unnecessary subplots. “Everybody Wants Some!!” keeps things simple, which allows us to focus on the characters and their interactions with each other.

In conclusion, “Everybody Wants Some!!” is an enjoyable movie that will make you laugh, dance, and reflect on your own experiences with college life. The cast is fantastic, the soundtrack is killer, and Linklater’s direction brings out the best in both. If you’re looking for a fun comedy to watch with your friends or significant other, this movie should definitely be on your list.

As Willoughby so eloquently puts it: “That’s what life is all about – trying new things.” And watching “Everybody Wants Some!!” is definitely worth trying if you haven’t already done so!
