Directed by and starring the legendary Eddie Murphy, this 1989 gem tells the story of Sugar Ray (played by Richard Pryor), a nightclub owner in 1930s Harlem, who finds himself caught up in a deadly conflict with the ruthless gangster Bugsy Calhoune (Michael Lerner).
The film takes place during a time when African Americans were still suffering from severe discrimination, and even the most successful among them could never be truly safe or equal.
