Logan: The Perfect End to the Wolverine Saga

In 2000, we were introduced to an unstoppable character known as Wolverine, and over the next 17 years, we have seen him fight tooth and nail in an effort to discover his past, protect those he loves and survive in a world that never seems to stop throwing challenges his way. There have been multiple iterations of the character over the years and many actors who have portrayed him on both the small and big screens. But finally, in March of 2017, Hugh Jackman bid farewell to this iconic role with Logan- a movie that can only be described as perfect.

The premise of Logan is set in a dystopian future (the year 2029) where mutants are virtually extinct. Those few who remain are either hiding out or being pursued by a corrupt government agency. We find Logan- aka The Wolverine- living on the Mexican border with Caliban (Stephen Merchant), taking care of an ailing Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart). However, their peaceful existence is soon disrupted when they come across Laura (Dafne Keen), a young girl with powers similar to their own, who is being hunted by dark forces.

The storyline of Logan was something that fans had been waiting for for years. Instead of focusing solely on X-Men lore and generic superhero action pieces, Logan opts for a more grounded approach that combines elements from classic Westerns and road movies. It’s not just about Wolverine’s physical prowess; it’s also about his emotional journey as he comes to terms with his mortality.

The acting in this movie was exceptional across the board. Hugh Jackman delivers one of his career-best performances as Logan, bringing an authenticity to the role that has rarely been seen before. Even more impressive was Patrick Stewart’s performance as Professor X- he adds depth and gravitas to a character who has always been defined by his intellect. Dafne Keen, playing X-23, was also outstanding, bringing an intensity and physicality to the character that made her a standout among her peers.

One of the most significant reasons for Logan’s success was director James Mangold’s decision to make the film rated R. This allowed for gritty violence and strong language that added an honesty to the movie that wouldn’t have been possible with a PG-13 rating. The result is a film that feels more mature and realistic than previous Wolverine-centric entries, and one that finally shows us the raw power of The Wolverine.

The film also deserves credit for its outstanding cinematography. The visuals are stunning throughout, ranging from wide shots of desolate landscapes to intimate close-ups of the characters’ faces. Mangold masterfully combines practical stunts with CGI elements to create action sequences that are both intense and grounded in reality.

Another aspect of Logan that deserves recognition is its score. Marco Beltrami’s music adds another layer of depth to the movie, heightening emotions during tense scenes and providing quieter moments with a melancholic tone. His score complements every scene perfectly, never distracting from what’s happening on screen.

At this point in his career, Hugh Jackman has become synonymous with Wolverine. He has portrayed the character in nine films over 17 years, and it’s hard to imagine anyone else stepping into those shoes. However, as much as we’ll miss seeing Jackman bring Wolverine to life on screen, Logan provides us with a fitting send-off for this iconic character- one that pays respect to everything he has accomplished over the years while also acknowledging his flaws and limitations.

In conclusion, Logan is not only one of the best superhero movies ever made but one of the best movies period. Its powerful performances by all involved coupled with its authentic story line made it impossible not to be moved by it. It’s a film about legacy; about passing on what you’ve learned before it’s too late. It’s a film that invites you to engage with its characters, to live with them through their pain and joys, all leading up to one of the most satisfying conclusions of any movie of this caliber. Logan is a work of art, and it deserves every bit of praise that has been showered on it since its debut. A fitting ending for an iconic character who’s been a part of our lives for nearly two decades. Thank you, Hugh Jackman, for everything you did with the Wolverine character- we couldn’t have asked for more.

All things considered, Logan will remain etched in the minds of moviegoers as one of the biggest movie milestones in history. It defied all expectations and delivered on everything promised by its trailers and teasers. The X-Men franchise has always had highs and lows, but in this case – it was a perfect conclusion that brought together top-notch performances from actors genuinely committed to their respective roles, exciting action sequences with beautiful cinematography and an emotionally resonant storyline that left us satisfied while also tugging on our heartstrings. Logan was a masterpiece in every sense of the word that will be remembered for years to come as one of the finest cinematic achievements ever made.
