There is a new film out that has been causing quite the stir. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, the movie is called “The Favourite” and it tells the story of two cousins battling it out for the title of Queen Anne’s favourite. It’s not your average period drama, let me tell you. Oh no, this one is unique and spicier than a jalapeno pepper. I had a chance to watch it recently and as a fan of Mark Twain, I must say he would have been impressed with this masterpiece.
The movie takes us back to early 18th century England where we meet Queen Anne (played by Olivia Colman), a monarch in frail health who is more interested in her pet rabbits than running the country. But don’t be fooled by her soft exterior, beneath lies a complicated woman with numerous insecurities.
Enter Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz), her longtime friend and advisor who also happens to be her secret lover. Lady Sarah runs the country on behalf of Queen Anne and she does so with an iron fist. However, things take an unexpected turn when Sarah’s cousin Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives at court looking for work after falling on hard times.
At first, Abigail is seen as nothing more than a servant girl but soon shows that she is smarter than she looks when she figures out how to get in the good graces of Queen Anne. And as Abigail quickly rises up through the ranks and becomes more powerful, Lady Sarah starts to feel threatened.
It’s a classic tale of power struggles mixed with sexual tension and dark humor – all beautifully illustrated throughout the film. The way each character interacted was incredible – sometimes it was hilarious while other times you could sense tension mounting between them.
Colman deserves special recognition for her performance as Queen Anne which was both hilarious yet heart-breaking at times. She delivered each word flawlessly while bringing such depth to the character. Weisz was equally amazing as Lady Sarah, displaying toughness and resilience while Stone brought an air of innocence that hid a much darker side of her character.
But it wasn’t just the acting that made this movie great, it was also the cinematography. The lush scenery of England’s countryside mixed with colorful costumes and intricate set designs provided a sense of grandeur and elegance throughout the film.
The score for “The Favourite” was also noteworthy, adding to the ambiance of the film. It was composed by Komeil S. Hosseini and used instruments from the time period such as harpsichord and strings.
And let’s not forget about its popularity among critics and audiences alike! The movie has been praised for its witty script, masterful direction, great acting, stunning visuals, unique storytelling approach – you name it. In fact, it has received numerous awards including Best Actress at the 2018 Venice Film Festival for Olivia Colman.
The making of “The Favourite” also saw a number of challenges during production including costume design issues caused by shooting in different locations with varying temperatures. According to reports, some actors even suffered from hypothermia!
Despite these challenges, Lanthimos managed to create a film that will go down in history as one of the most iconic period dramas ever made. The dialogue between characters is razor-sharp while scenes are both shockingly violent and beautifully shot at once.
Overall, “The Favourite” is a triumph in every aspect which will please audiences who are looking for something different in their historical dramas. And I must say Mark Twain would have probably loved this one – full of wit, dark humor and unconventional storytelling methods – it’s definitely worth seeing!
